What is different, honestly
Some differences favour us, some favour Microsoft, and some are just two different designs. We have sorted them that way so you can decide which column matters to you.
Where Talos gives you more
- Dedicated hardware. Each desktop is its own virtual server with reserved vCores and RAM on AMD EPYC hosts. It is never a shared session host.
- More cores and more storage at every price point, as the table shows.
- 14 nightly backups included. Every desktop is backed up automatically each night and the last 14 are kept, on separate storage, at no extra cost. Windows 365 Business offers restore points, but you configure and manage them yourself.
- No Microsoft subscription required. Nothing to license or administer in a Microsoft tenant. Use the Microsoft 365, Google Workspace or any other software you already have, or none at all.
- Your choice of location: Los Angeles, Dallas, Ashburn or Eygelshoven (FFM), Germany.
- Hardened before handoff: encrypted drive, brute-force protection, account lockout, non-standard remote port, trusted certificate, debloated image.
- A document for your IT team listing every configuration choice we made and why.
- Price locked for as long as you keep the desktop. No contract, no setup fee.
- A real person answers your ticket, and admins get an emergency phone number.
Where Windows 365 gives you more
- Multi-factor sign-in through your Microsoft account. Talos desktops are protected by strong passwords, lockout and brute-force banning; MFA for remote sign-in is not currently offered.
- Resizing in place, up or down. Talos desktops can be upgraded in place but not downgraded; a smaller desktop means a fresh build.
- Microsoft behind it. Microsoft's own support organisation and service commitments, if that is what your compliance team wants to see.
Different by design
- Management. Windows 365 is managed through Microsoft's admin tooling and policies. A Talos desktop is yours after handoff: manage it directly as an admin, or enrol it in whatever MDM you already use.
- Sign-in. Windows 365 users sign in with their Microsoft work account. Talos desktops use local Windows accounts that you create and control, with no outside identity provider in the loop.
- Billing. Windows 365 is a per-user license inside your Microsoft billing. A Talos desktop is a per-desktop monthly charge on a Talos invoice, cancel any time.
- What a "desktop" is. A Windows 365 Cloud PC is a managed service instance. A Talos desktop is a real virtual server you could, in principle, do anything with that Windows allows.
Our view. If your IT team already runs everything through Microsoft's management tools and wants Microsoft to own the whole stack, Windows 365 is the safer fit. If you want a dedicated, hardened Windows PC for each remote employee at a lower fixed price, with your own team or MDM in control after handoff, that is what we built Talos Cloud Desktops for.
